In order to grasp the awesomeness of Rebekah.. we have to start in the beginning of Genesis 24.. Usually I don’t like to mention the men when we study these women.. BUT this time is the exception. I felt like if I went into herSTORY.. we will miss it! 🧐Name One thing all these women have in common that we discussed over these past few months... verse 1-3 basically is all we need to build the foundation! As we ask: what was her purpose. Verse 1-3 reads: And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
So Abraham who we know who the 1st promise was given to.. (Genesis 15:18-21).. he basically was like I don’t want my son to marry one of these women from Canaan. If u keep reading...He sent his servants to go find Isaac a wife. His servant was like what if she don’t want to come... Abraham told her .. if that be so.. then u are free of this oath. So the servant said this: verses 12-14 And he said O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
🙌🏾Yessss! See I have done this before and it came to pass! That’s how know it was of The Most High when I felt like I couldn’t trust my own discernment! Sometimes we just need HIM to send a sign so that we know it’s HIM and not us.. #SomebodyMayGetitOnThe2ndRead! So the servant spoke a prayer that he would be successful in the sight of his master Abraham..he needed a sign so that he would know that the woman was sent by The Most High. So the servant set forth... and here is where we find Rebekah:
🌊Genesis 24: 15-24 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not. And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in?
🧕🏾As her name reflected, Rebekah was a woman of captivating beauty. In Genesis 24:16, it was noted “she was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known... in these days being a virgin until marriage was quite common. I know iM jumping ahead.. but although we won’t study up on this part.. but she was so beautiful that Isaac did not even want to refer to her as his wife because of the possibility that other, jealous men might kill him to get to Rebekah (Genesis 26:7). So, let’s pause here.. I wondered what Rebekah was thinking when these men rode up on her.. she had to have been inside of the will of The Most High to literally fulfill what the servant asked of HIM to make sure he was seeking out the right woman for Isaac.. Rebekah didn’t miss a beat.. when serving these men who she didn’t know with pure kindness..not expecting anything but being kind. This is how you know she came from a good family.. and she was at that moment chosen by The Most High for a remarkable task. She drew more than water from that well that day.. she was drawing from the WILL... That mere simple act of kindness was the sign to the servant of Abraham that The Most High had indeed answered his prayer and had shown kindness to Abraham in directing him to the chosen wife for Isaac ... as the servant requested (Psalms 62:5- My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation [is] from him)... the one thing I forgot to mention earlier was before the servant could finish his prayer... Rebekah was in place.. now what if she had made a stop for some fabric or woke up late or wasn’t in the mood to draw water that day!? She would have missed out on a love like none other.. AND the promise..
🌈Takeaway: Stay on HIS course in kindness and love..because you never know whose prayer you are apart of. But To answer the question from the first paragraph , it’s OBEDIENCE. All of these righteous women so far had obedience! We will dive more into why I said Rebekah was obedient... she was where she needed to be..in the path of drawing from HIS will at the well!
